historical development of euro-chess

From the late seventies the Franciscusoord Mytylschool (now Adelante Mytylschool) in collaboration with "Adelante Schaakt", formerly "Schaak- en Damvereniging Houthem"(DSH) organised chess activities for disabled and non-disabled youngsters.

In the early nineties the chess activities expanded with the participation of Mytylschool "De Brug" from Rotterdam.Together they participated annually in international chess tournaments for young disabled people in the Czech capital Prague.

1989 Franciscusoord Mytylschool in cooperation with the "Schaak- en Damvereniging Houthem" (DSH) and the Limburgse Schaakbond (LiSB) organised the first Euro-Chess edition: Euro-Chess 1998 at Franciscusoord.

As already mentioned, the name changed from “Franciscusoord Mytylschool” to “Adelante Mytylschool”.

Since then this event is a source of innovation and enrichment for European Youth Exchange.  Here was by various European cities, including Valkenburg, Prague, Budapest, Bratislava, Bydgoszcz and Rotterdam the basis for a thematic cooperation was laid, for which an annual exchange is the central focus.  The exchange tournament was and is always organized in one of the (future) member states of the European Union.
