Willy Wijsen, past away on Saturday,  June 4th 2016

Willy was active as a volunteer for about 35 years during the chess activities of Adelante Schaakt and Euro-Chess. He disinterestedly deployed himself for youngsters with and without physical and/or visual limitations. Chess was also a way for Willy to improve integration between these youngsters in our society. Last may during Euro-Chess 2016 at Adelante in Valkenburg aan de Geul, Willy was often present. We will miss Willy dearly.

European Commissioner for Employment, Social Affairs, Skills and Labour Mobility.

Euro-Chess 2016 is a one-of-a-kind chess tournament. It brings into contact young people from different walks of life and with varying degrees of physical capacity from 7 European member states. A shared passion for chess unites the participants and offers them a chance to discover the diversity of Europe and to further their own development. It will be an undeniably uplifting and rewarding experience. Through this initiative, the Euro-Chess Foundation and Adelante are making their own valuable contribution to intercultural dialogue between young people and towards social inclusiveness in Europe. Bringing people together, despite all the barriers - imaginable or otherwise - is what today's Europe is all about.

I am delighted to give my support to this commendable project and wish all the young people who are participating every success.
